Big news for the recycling industry! The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has discovered more than 600,000 fake Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) certificates issued by recycling firms in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. This has prompted a national audit of plastic-waste recyclers.
Around 800 out of 2,348 plastic waste recycling firms are being thoroughly audited to ensure they’re doing everything right. This process, led by auditors from top research institutions, is designed to catch any discrepancies and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
So, why are these audits so important?
Recently, several recycling companies were found to have inflated their recycling numbers. They issued more certificates claiming to recycle plastic than they could actually back up with proof. This issue came to light after surprise inspections revealed that these companies couldn’t show that they had sold the amount of recycled plastic they reported.
These audits are a crucial step in cleaning up the industry. By examining whether these firms are truly recycling as much as they claim, authorities aim to ensure that the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system is effective and trustworthy. The results from these audits are expected to be made public later this year, giving us all a clearer picture of which companies are upholding the standards and which need to step up their game.
Stay informed as this story develops and helps improve the integrity of the recycling sector!
